BIOGRAPHY

Ng Zhu Yi

"The moment her fingers touch the piano Zhu Yi has the capability to stop the time. Her listening to the silence and her beautiful sound always captivate the listeners. A very sensitive and noble pianist."- Prof Grzegorz Niemczuk

"A truly beautiful cantabile sound. Sensitive, soulful, and exquisitely shaped."- Ms. Nurry Lee

Zhu Yi is a dedicated classical pianist currently pursuing full-time studies at LASALLE College of the Arts, under the mentorship of Mr. Frank Joseph DeMeglio, Head of Classical Studies. Her artistic journey has been marked by both performance excellence and a passion for music education.

Beginning piano at the age of five, Zhu Yi completed all eight grades of the ABRSM examinations, forming a strong technical and musical foundation. While her early musical path followed a traditional route, she values it as a vital connection to the experiences of young learners. This perspective deeply informs her teaching philosophy—one that embraces music as a lifelong journey and emphasizes joyful, effective practice as the cornerstone of development for every aspiring musician.

Zhu Yi has actively performed in both solo and duet settings. In 2024, she made her solo recital debut at the Singapore Airlines Theatre, followed by her concerto debut in Germany in 2025—both significant milestones in her artistic development. She was also a finalist in the Golden Lion Awards Piano Competition and received the Gold Award at the Overseas Performance Festival in Singapore.

In both 2024 and 2025, Zhu Yi was selected to participate in the prestigious Fiestravaganza International Music Festival (FIMA) in Berlin, founded by Singaporean composer and pianist Shaun Choo. There, she had the opportunity to engage in masterclasses with a distinguished faculty of internationally acclaimed pianists:
   •    Jacques Rouvier,

Piano Professor at the Mozarteum University Salzburg and Honorary Professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris
   •    Bjorn Lehmann,

Vice Dean of Music and Head of Piano at the University of the Arts Berlin
   •    Lucas Blondeel,

Piano and Fortepiano Professor at the University of the Arts Berlin
   •    Christian A. Pohl,

Professor of Piano at the University of Music and Theatre

        “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig

Her playing has been praised by renowned Polish pianist Greg Niemczuk as “sensitive and noble,” characterised by a refined sound and deep musicality.

Equally passionate about shaping future musicians, Zhu Yi brings her introspective musicality into her teaching. Through her "PracticeWorks" approach, she guides students to discover discipline through joy, curiosity through consistency, and confidence through thoughtful practice. She believes deeply in the transformative power of music on stage, in the studio, and in the daily life of every young learner.

Zhu Yi continues to inspire through her dual commitment to performance and education, blending her evolving artistry with a heart for nurturing the next generation of musicians.
